
Dr. Tony Gu – PGY5
Dr. Gu was raised in Calgary, Alberta. He completed his MD as well as BSc in neuroscience at the University of Calgary. He grew up surrounded by the mountains and enjoys all aspects of the outdoors, including hiking, fishing, and camping.
In addition to clinical work, Dr. Gu has an interest in teaching and mentorship. He continues to conduct research in multiple areas of vascular surgery, including peripheral vascular disease, aortic disease, dialysis access, collaboration between specialties, and sustainability.
In his spare time, Dr. Gu enjoys cooking, being active, pop music, and spending time with friends and family. He is always busy planning his next big trip.
Dr. Farhad Udwadia – PGY4
Dr. Udwadia earned his MD from the University of British Columbia after completing a Master of Bioethics from Harvard University, and a BA in Economics from McGill University. He is originally from Bombay, India.
During medical school, he conducted various research studies within Vascular Surgery, and its interaction with medical ethics. He received the George W. Leroux Memorial Scholarship for demonstrating an aptitude for surgery upon graduation. In residency, he continues to be involved in research and teaching.
Farhad is a former rugby player, playing at the national level and at McGill University. In his spare time, he enjoys staying active, travelling and spending time with his family and friends.


Dr. Ibraham Al Kindi – PGY4
Dr. Al Kindi earned his medical degree from the Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman. He had shown a keen interest in Vascular Surgery throughout medical school and was pleased to join the Vascular Residency Program at UBC to start a career path a specialty he is enthusiastic about.
Ibrahim enjoys spending his free time with his wife and son, cooking, and barbecuing.
Dr. Meghan McGillivray – PGY3
Dr. McGillivray earned her MD from the University of British Columbia after completing a BSc in Physiology with a minor in Kinesiology at McGill. At the time of graduation, she was awarded the George W. Leroux Memorial Scholarship for demonstrating an aptitude for surgery. Starting residency, she is looking forward to being involved in teaching and research.
Meghan grew up on her family’s centennial cattle ranch in Kamloops BC and continues to be involved in the agriculture community. In her free time, she enjoys staying active and trying new restaurants.


Dr. Amna Ismaili – PGY2
Dr. Ismaili is originally from Brampton, Ontario. She completed both her MD and BSc Honours Kinesiology at McMaster University before moving to Vancouver for residency. She has a strong passion for leadership development and has taken on many leadership roles throughout undergrad and medical school. She is excited to be in Vancouver for the next five years and looking forward to engaging in research and teaching initiatives!
Amna loves to explore restaurants or coffee shops in her spare time, and is always seeking new recommendations. She enjoys travelling during her vacation time and has been to over 25 countries in her lifetime! Amna is also very passionate about physical activity and enjoys working out along with exploring the many Vancouver hikes!
Dr. Omaima Al Alyani – PGY2
Omaima Al Alyani completed her MD degree at Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman with distinction. She showed her interest in vascular surgery early in medical school, doing her elective rotations and attending conferences. She is Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course instructor.
She enjoys her time in sightseeing, hiking and jogging. She likes spending time with family and friends.


Dr. Nicholas Reitsma – PGY1
Born in Calgary, Dr. Reitsma has the pleasure of having lived in several countries, including Egypt, the Netherlands, and the United States, before completing his Human Kinetics undergraduate degree and medical school in Kelowna. He’s now excited to begin his new chapter in Vancouver. He is deeply committed to medical education and student leadership, aiming to continue these important endeavours throughout his residency and beyond.
Outside of his medical pursuits, Nicholas is a former university soccer goalkeeper and coach. He maintains an active lifestyle through working out and playing golf, and cherishes time spent with his wife, family, friends, and beloved dog.
Dr. Maryam Al Issai – PGY1
Originally from Oman, Dr. Al Issai is a proud graduate of Sultan Qaboos University and a certified ATLS instructor. Passionate about surgery and lifelong learning, she is thrilled to begin her vascular surgery residency journey at UBC and looks forward to growing as both a clinician and a researcher.
Outside of medicine, Maryam cherishes spending quality time with family and close friends. She loves discovering new restaurants and cafés and are excited to explore everything Vancouver has to offer from its vibrant food scene to its breathtaking natural beauty.
