Research Overview

Vascular surgeons within the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of British Columbia have spearheaded, participated in, and continue to be involved in a wide range of research studies across all our affiliated sites. This includes primarily clinical, but also bench-top research, but we are continuously looking for ways to expand our horizons. Our researchers are actively involved in randomized trials to assess endovenous deep vein valve technology, as well as the use of stem cells for management of chronic limb threatening ischemia. Our division at Vancouver General Hospital is actively pursuing participation in the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative as the only hospital site in British Columbia and 8th in Canada. This international quality improvement project includes data from over 11,000 academic and community vascular centres across the globe, and will facilitate generalizable, high powered clinical research.

Some of our other areas of active research include:

  • Use of physician modified aortic stent grafts for emergent aortic presentations
  • Evaluation of hydrophilic polymer embolization from endovascular sheaths
  • Management of patients with dangling carotid thrombus
  • Predictive modelling of the need for shunting in patients undergoing carotid surgery
  • Direct comparison of arm vein to prosthetic lower extremity bypass for lower extremity ischemia
  • Effects of long and short acting brachial plexus blocks on arteriovenous fistula maturation
  • Utility of vertebral artery revascularization prior to TEVAR
  • Use of near infrared spectroscopy for diagnosis of lower extremity non-atherosclerotic arterial disease
