Originally from Chicoutimi, Québec, Dr Joel Gagnon completed his medical school at the University of Sherbrooke, his General Surgery training at the University Laval in Québec City. He moved to Vancouver in 2004 to complete his Vascular Surgery fellowship at UBC. He quickly gain an interest in complex endovascular surgery and extended his travelling fellowship under the guidance of well-known vascular surgeons from Netherlands, Germany, and Australia.

For 14 years, Dr Gagnon practiced at Vancouver General Hospital where he gains experience in all aspect of vascular surgery. In particular, he focused on thoracic outlet decompression surgery, complex aortic endo-grafting (fenestrated and branch endograft) including physician modified graft, complex venous reconstruction (Open & Endovascular) and advanced endovascular peripheral revascularization.

In 2019, Dr Gagnon decided to move his practice to Royal Columbia Hospital (RCH) within the Fraser Health Authority. He quickly moved into the role as the Head of the Division of Vascular Surgery at RCH but remains very active in the clinical setting with a continued interest in physician modified endograft expanding the technique from the abdomen to the thoracic aorta.

When Dr Gagnon is not busy at work, he is keeping up with his wife, three growing children, 2 dogs and 30,000+ busy bees as a backyard beekeeper.  He also enjoys General Aviation and in recent years, has passed on the interest to his son as they have explored British Columbia in their Cessna 182J, and flown multiple long cross-country trips to Ontario and Quebec.
